C3-4 Disc Arthroplasty – Case Study
Patient History A 49 year-old female presented with severe right shoulder and arm pain and numbness for a period of four months. An MRI of the cervical spine revealed a large herniated disc with cord compression at C3-4. The symptoms progressively worsened with conservative management. Surgery was offered in the form of a C3-4 disc replacement in order to decompress the spinal cord while maintaining the patient’s neck mobility and range of motion. Treatment Plan C3-4 total disc arthroplasty Surgical Technique Performed under general anesthesia Small anterior neck incision in the crease of the skin Complete cervical discectomy and decompression of the spinal cord and nerve roots Precise insertion of the artificial disc under x-ray guidance Subcuticular closure of the skin incision Benefits of Cervical Arthroplasty (Disc Replacement) vs Cervical Fusion (ACDF): Preservation of spinal motion Significant reduction of adjacent level failure No need for cervical collar postoperatively Reduced surgical time Shorter recovery period and return to normal activities [...]
Fast Relief for Spinal Surgery Patients – Case Study
Case History 69-year old male Patient had three-month history of spontaneous left lower extremity pain MRI of the spine revealed multilevel lumbar spinal degeneration Diagnosis Patient had a left L4-L5 facet synovial cyst associated with left lower extremity radiculopathy in the L5 and primarily S1 distribution. Pain was nearly constant with varying degrees of intensity based on position changes. The pain began in left buttock and radiated down his hamstrings and calves. Intensity of pain was highest in the morning and after prolonged sitting. Treatment The patient was treated with a minimally invasive lumbar decompression and cyst resection through the use of the METRx™ System retractor on the left side. The unique, muscle-splitting METRx™ System provides access to the spine with less tissue trauma than traditional surgeries to relieve pressure on nerves. Procedures with this system offer significant potential benefits Procedure performed as out-patient so patient went home on the same day. Dime-size scar vs. four-inch incision with surgery Dime-size [...]
